Certain community businesses were also invited to participate and have made wonderful, vibrant, and creative contributions to the collection, such as this year’s “Bare Metallic.”

“Bare Metallic”, the eleventh bear, was created by Michael R. Contreras, owner and operator of MJM Painting and Authentic Restoration Company. MJM Painting has been servicing the Tri-State area for over 28 years and has enhanced the services by adding decorative finishes such as metal effects (the inspiration for the bear), faux finishes, and authentic Venetian plaster. MJM Painting brings imagination to life in creating the finishing the clients desire. The bears will be sold at a silent auction during the festival, so be sure to attend in order to get your paws on the “Bare Metallic Bear” or one of the other beautiful sculptures.

Milford, PA – The Artful Bears of 2012, a signature warm up to the Black Bear Film Festival, have been playing in the streets of Milford. Each of them seem to have a different personality- but what do they represent? The eleven bears, designed by local artists and sponsored by generous local businesses, are tributes to a wide-variety of cultural phenomena, from HIV-awareness and other diseases to pop icons and artists. No matter what the theme, these colorful, eye-catching, and creative bears are a delightful embodiment of the cultural and educational ideals of the Black Bear Film Festival.

One of the ten bears, designed by Gary S. Dodd, is named “Albeart Einstein” and is in honor of his intelligent human counterpart. Mr. Dodd quoted Albert Einstein to describe his bear: “I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” Mr. Dodd was born in Middletown, NY and graduated from Middletown High School in 1969. He attended college in Panama City, Fl, and moved back to Wurtsboro, NY, where he has operated the Wurtsboro Wholesale Antiques for over 30 years. For more information or to contact Mr. Dodd, please email him at doga79@aol.com.

Milford, PA –The Black Bear Film Festival unveiled the 2012 Artful Bear Sculptures to the public in Milford last Saturday, August 11th, 2012 in the garden of the Milford Community House. The eleven bears and their artists met with community members on a beautiful summer morning to explain their backgrounds and the inspiration behind the bears that now decorate the streets of Milford.

This year’s bears, designed by local artists and sponsored by generous local businesses, range from serious-themed bears such as “Keith Bearing,” an HIV awareness bear, to playful bears resembling famous celebrities. No matter what the theme, these colorful, eye-catching, and creative bears are a delightful embodiment of the cultural and educational ideals of the Black Bear Film Festival.

The ninth bear, titled “Keith Bearing” was designed by local author, screenwriter, playwright, and editor Amy Ferris. The bear is a tribute to the AIDS & HIV epidemic, those who fought, passed away, or are currently surviving the disease. Ms. Ferris has written for both films and television, including Mr. Wonderful and Funny Valentines, the latter which was nominated for awards. Amy has contributed to numerous anthologies, including He Said What? (2011); Exit Laughing (2012); The Drinking Diaries (2012); The Buddha Next Door (2007), and the soon-to-be-released Dancing at the Shame Prom (2012), which she co-edited. Her memoir, Marrying George Clooney, Confessions from a Midlife Crisis (Seal Press 2010) is heading off-Broadway for the fall of 2012 and winter of 2013. Ms. Ferris serves on the faculty of the San Miguel de Allende Literary Festival and teaches memoir and non-fiction writing at UCLA (the Writers Extension Program).

No matter what the theme, these brightly-colored, eye-catching, and creative bears are a delightful embodiment of the cultural and educational ideals of the Black Bear Film Festival.

The first bear, titled “Jasper Johns’ Target Bear,” was designed by Phil Rachelson as an appropriation of one of Jasper Johns’ famous target paintings. Mr. Rachelson was born in Brooklyn in 1948 and studied at CCNY, where he received his BFA. He worked as a colorist for many years for both Marvel and DC comics, and has also taught art at the Hudson Valley River Museum and the Staten Island Museum. His work has been shown in galleries and art fairs in New York, Miami, Connecticut, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Amsterdam, and is in several private collections. He currently owns and operates The Forge Studio and Gallery in Milford, PA, where he shows work by contemporary artists and has his studio. He also exhibits his art in various other art spaces. For more information or to contact Mr. Rachelson, please email him at theforge1@verizon.net.

The Jasper Johns Target Bear was sponsored by Michael Elf and Frank Bonello of Shohola, PA and the Upper Mill Complex.

The Artful Bear Sculptures are a fundraising effort to support the 13th Annual Black Bear Film Festival, occurring this October 12-14th. The bears will be sold at a silent auction during the festival, so be sure to attend in order to get your paws on the “Jasper Johns’ Target Bear” or one of the other beautiful sculptures.

The Black Bear Film Festival began in Milford, PA, in 2000 when a small group of creative locals set out to produce an event that would support and promote innovate and independent films. The Black Bear Film Festival celebrates Milford’s rich film-making heritage and the conservation movement in tribute to Gifford Pinchot, who fathered the American conservation movement. Zane Grey, D.W. Griffith, Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish, and John Barrymore are just a few of the film legends who have lived in and visited Milford in the past. The Black Bear Film Festival is proud to announce that the Art Bears, created by local artisans, are back in town just in time to promote the 13th Annual Fall Film Festival. Join the bears for light refreshments on August 11th, between 10:30 am-1:30 pm, in the garden of the Milford Community house, or as we all know it the Milford Library lawn.

The event will take place rain or shine, and is a great way to support our local Film Festival! Plus, once you’ve chosen your favorite bear, you’ll have a chance to bid on it at this year’s festival, occurring October 12-14, when the bears are part of a silent auction!
